organics - kinder to the environment

Organic products are rapidly growing in popularity. The organic food industry is one of the fastest growing product sectors in the world. As for organic cosmetics, this is now following right behind it. For many, organics are no longer seen as a luxury or an alternative, but as popular main-stream products.

With levels of lifestyle related diseases increasing over the last few decades, we are now becoming more health conscious and aware of the products we consume and apply to our bodies.

The organic movement not only addresses some of our immediate health concerns, but organic farmers are looking beyond their own backyard and into the future...

what is organic?

Certified organic products are grown and processed without the use of synthetic chemicals, fertilisers, or GMOs. It is an innovative method of farming production - and is increasingly being recognised as being on the leading edge of food and fibre technology into the future.

Organics is not just chemical free by testing. It is about the way your food is grown and handled. The whole system is linked - soil; plants; animals; food; people; environment. Standards to achieve this are internationally recognised, and are assured through annual audits of all certified operators by an independent third party auditor.

The only way consumers can be assured that they are purchasing real organic products, produced without the use of synthetic chemicals and GMOs, is to purchase products which have been organically certified with a recognised body such as the Australian Certified Organic (ACO).  Biological Farmers of Australia (BFA) have this certification and it is this group with whom Sydney Essential Oil Co. is certified.

The BUD logo, as it is known, is the most used and recognised organic logo in Australia. It is also the oldest mark for organic products currently used in the country.

why choose organic?

good for the soil
Organic systems rely on a modern and scientific understanding of ecology and soil science, while also depending on traditional methods of crop rotations to ensure fertility and weed and pest control.

good for animals
Great emphasis is placed on animal welfare.

good for the environment
Organic systems aim to reduce dependence on non-renewable resources. Organic production aims at all times towards sustainability whilst having best management of the environment and wildlife as a priority.

good for people
Organic produce have been shown in a number of studies to contain more vitamins, nutrients and cancer-fighting antioxidants than non-organic produce.

no synthetic chemicals
Organic systems prohibit the use of artificial chemicals, pesticides and fertilisers. Therefore crops are grown and animals go though life, without the treatment of synthetic growth hormones or drugs.

no GMOs
Organic products are produced without GMOs, which are prohibited in the BFA standards for organic food and farming.

organic farming

Organic farming methods are geared towards maintaining and improving agricultural production whilst conserving and enhancing other eco-systems that are influenced by their farming activities.

It is very much about balancing the relationships and dependencies between soil fertility, crop quality and surrounding native animal life. Whilst aiming to produce crops and foods of high nutritional quality, organic farming methods avoid degrading the soil structure, water quality or nutrient levels, all of which is good for long term sustainability.

sustainability

The key principle of sustainability is to meet the needs of today without compromising the ability of future generations to meet the needs of tomorrow. If we were to continue on a path of using natural resources at a faster rate than we replenish them, then farming would ultimately become unsustainable.

Organic farmers have addressed and eliminated methods that have negative impacts on the environment and on the productivity of the land. By definition, organic crops are grown without the aid of artificial or chemical pesticides, fertilisers or herbicides and are not genetically modified. This reduces negative ecological effects such as fertiliser run-offs, low soil water retention, and low levels of natural animal life.

From a human consumption level, it means no chemical residue in our foods or organic body products.

choice

From the farmer's perspective, choosing to farm by organic methods is in many cases a philosophical choice. Some are driven by wanting to care for the environment; others are concerned about the health of their family, and some see it as a way of protecting our planet for future generations.

Either way, the farmers' choice ultimately gives us (the consumer) more choice. And when it comes down to the bottom line, organics are kinder to the environment and will hold us and future generations in good stead for a safer tomorrow.

check the label

Don't be misled by unsubstantiated label claims. Be sure the organic products you buy are 'certified organic' by looking for the 'bud' logo on the label.

Australian Certified Oragnic (ACO) issues the Australian Organic Standard. This Standard is met and monitored by the Biological Farmers Association (BFA) one of the certifying bodies in Australia. Business Audits on all processes from crop to the bottle/table are monitored annually. Every step is fully traceable to verify organic status and authenticity.
